Rate Relief & Persistent ETF Exits

Quick summary

  • Bitcoin trades near 81500, 35 percent below all-time high, despite eased rate hike odds

  • Spot Bitcoin ETFs see persistent October outflows, led by IBIT and FBTC redemptions

  • Bitcoin price holds above key moving averages amid compressed volatility and uncommitted rebound

  • Traditional market activities increasingly use crypto rails via KPI options, TSLA perps, expanded USDC

Bitcoin trades at $81,519 at 05:07 UTC on October 17, 2026, 35% below its $126,156 all-time high and 0.02% below the prior daily close. Rate pressure eased through the October 16 session, while ETF redemptions picked up again.

Bitcoin/U.S. Dollar 4-hour candlestick chart on Kraken, from late September to mid-October 2026, with two downward-sloping trendlines converging to the right. Price has made lower highs and lower lows inside the lines and now trades near $81,500, showing early signs of a descending wedge. Historically, the descending wedge is a bullish pattern, but it is only confirmed by a breakout above the upper trendline. Source: TradingView

Rate Relief: Hike Odds Fall While ETF Redemptions Return

The two forces behind BTC’s dip under $80,000 on October 15 moved in opposite directions over the following session:

  • Rate odds: CME FedWatch’s probability of a 25-basis-point October hike fell to 15% from 27% a day earlier, after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave no indication of further hikes, per Cointelegraph. The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.13% before settling near 5.07% on October 16, so rates remain a live risk rather than a resolved one.

  • ETF redemptions: DefiLlama-tracked spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded an USD 82.4M net outflow on October 16, led by IBIT (−USD 71.8M) and FBTC (−USD 10.6M). Across all 12 tracked funds, the five sessions from October 12 to 16 totaled −USD 228.4M.

  • The week's sequence: Across all 12 tracked funds, three of the five sessions were outflow days: October 12 (−USD 65.4M), October 14 (−USD 261.4M) and October 16 (−USD 82.4M). Only October 13 (+USD 175.7M) and October 15 (+USD 5.1M) brought net inflows.

  • Month to date: October outflows reached −USD 614.7M through October 16, with a −USD 484.9M exit on October 7 accounting for most of the total. External tallies near USD 145M for the week and USD 535M for the month match DefiLlama's totals through Thursday, October 15 (−USD 146.0M and −USD 532.3M), before the October 16 outflow.

  • Observation: Hike odds nearly halved, yet fund holders kept redeeming, with IBIT leading the October 16 outflow.

  • Interpretation: Rate pressure eased; ETF selling didn’t. Relief in rates has not yet translated into demand through the largest institutional channel.

  • Benefit: Price holding above $80,000 while funds redeem shows sellers being absorbed. A run of daily inflows would be the first sign that rate relief is turning into fresh demand.

Technicals: The Squeeze Holds Above the 200-Day Average

  • Range: Compression this tight tends to precede a larger move, but the bands do not show its direction.

  • Nearest test: The October 15 candle fell to $79,813.74 before closing at $82,160.22. A close back under that low would show the rebound failing; a hold keeps the squeeze resolving from above the 200-day average.

Always-On Rails: Crypto Venues Take On Traditional-Market Business

Three developments between October 14 and 16 moved traditional-market activity onto crypto-linked venues and rails:

  • KPI binary options: On October 14, the SEC approved a Cboe rule change allowing yes-or-no options on more than 100 reported metrics from 23 public companies, including Coinbase trading volume, Robinhood customer count and MARA bitcoin production. The contracts are cash-settled, European-style and settle on figures in SEC filings. Robinhood is expected to be the first retail broker to offer them, but trading waits on provisional registration for the clearing house, Cboe Clear U.S. Cboe shares rose more than 4% on the news while Robinhood fell nearly 9%, per Crypto Briefing.

  • Off-hours price discovery: After Elon Musk unveiled a flying Tesla Roadster prototype on October 15 with U.S. stock markets closed, hourly volume in Hyperliquid's TSLA perpetual jumped from USD 2.8M to USD 47M, per CoinDesk. The contract rose about 4.9% to roughly USD 378, against a USD 362.44 Tesla close. Binance still logged more 24-hour Tesla-contract volume (USD 279M against USD 159M, per RootData), while Hyperliquid held the most open interest at USD 99M. The contract tracks Tesla's price and settles in USDC; it is not a share.

Tesla (TSLA) monthly candlestick chart on a logarithmic scale, 2020 to October 2026, showing a multi-year ascending wedge. The upper trendline links the December 2021 and November 2025 highs, and the lower trendline links the January 2023 and May 2024 lows. Price sits at $354.72, on the lower support line, near the August 2026 low. Three scenarios are drawn. In the first, price rises but stays capped by the upper trendline. In the second, price breaks support, retests it as resistance and rejects. In the third, price breaks support and falls about 43%, roughly $152. The trendlines converge near February 2028. Ascending wedges are bearish by design, so a decisive break above both resistance lines would be needed to invalidate the structure. A 71.29 percent decline from the December 2021 peak into January 2023 is marked for reference. Source: TradingView
  • Stablecoin reach: Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire told Reuters on October 16 that the USDC issuer plans to enter about 40 emerging and developing markets, per Decrypt. USDC circulation stands at $72.70B, 24.2% of the stablecoin market on DefiLlama’s non-double-counted basis. Separately, Treasury’s comment window on its proposed GENIUS Act rule closes October 19 (91 FR 53368).

Interpretation: None of the three moves BTC’s price directly. Together, they show market activity migrating to venues that never close and settle in dollar tokens. For Bitcoin holders, growth in settlement rails does not depend on BTC’s price, and it widens the routes new capital can use to reach the asset.

Coinjuice Lens: Market Structure

Coinjuice’s October 16 analysis of the fast rebound and compressed range framed BTC’s bounce as one without commitment. The following day I sharpened that read. Rate pressure eased; ETF selling didn’t. Structure is improving at the edges, through venues and rails, while the largest fund channel keeps redeeming. With bandwidth near half its 60-day median, the confirmation to watch is whether daily ETF flows turn positive as the squeeze resolves.

FAQ

Why did Bitcoin hold above $80,000 despite ETF outflows?

Rate pressure eased on October 16. CME FedWatch odds of an October rate hike fell to 15% from 27% after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh gave no indication of further hikes, per Cointelegraph. Spot Bitcoin ETFs still recorded an $82.4M net outflow that day, led by IBIT, so price held while funds redeemed. That points to sellers being absorbed, not to confirmed new demand.

Are Bitcoin ETF outflows slowing?

Not on the latest data. DefiLlama shows an $82.4M net outflow on October 16, the third outflow day in five sessions, and −$228.4M across all 12 tracked funds from October 12 to 16. October 16 was smaller than the −$263.6M four-fund exit on October 14, but larger than the inflow days on either side. Month-to-date outflows reached −$614.7M.

What are the SEC-approved KPI binary options?

They are yes-or-no options on reported company metrics, approved for Cboe on October 14 and covering more than 100 metrics from 23 public companies, including Coinbase trading volume, Robinhood customer count and MARA bitcoin production. They are cash-settled and settle on figures in SEC filings. Robinhood is expected to offer them first, once the clearing house, Cboe Clear U.S., receives provisional registration.

Why did Hyperliquid’s Tesla contract move while stock markets were closed?

Elon Musk unveiled a flying Tesla Roadster prototype on October 15 after the U.S. close. Hyperliquid’s TSLA perpetual trades around the clock, so hourly volume jumped from $2.8M to $47M and the price rose about 4.9% to roughly $378, per CoinDesk. The contract tracks Tesla’s price and settles in USDC, but holds no shares. Binance recorded larger 24-hour volume.
